Daisy the dog is back on her feet, with help from California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad and generous donors to the FACE Foundation.

Daisy, a year-old American bulldog mix, was hit by a truck Jan. 15. She got away from her owner, Sean Tillman of Vista, after spotting a ball down the street. Tillman, a Marine just back from a deployment to Iraq and father of a daughter born Dec. 11, raced Daisy to the animal hospital with instructions to "do whatever you have to to keep Daisy alive."

He put down $2,000, rounded up an additional $2,500 by appealing to friends and borrowed some more. But he still fell short of the cost of Daisy's treatment. That's where FACE, the Foundation for Animal Care and Education, stepped in. The Del Mar-based nonprofit provides financial assistance for lifesaving veterinary care.

Demands for the foundation's assistance, though, had already exceeded its $17,000 budget for January. But donors Peri and Peg Urvek of Del Mar offered to pay the rest of the bill for Daisy's care.

Daisy returned home Tuesday afternoon and is doing well. "She's walking on her own," said Nicole O'Brien, animal grant coordinator for FACE, which is scrambling to keep up with requests for assistance. "This month has been incredibly busy for us."
