Snakebite Season Is Upon Us Already!
Mickey is a 6 year old shepherd mix brought in for a swelling on his lip. The owners reported that he was barking at something in the yard during the night , which is unusual for him. The swelling progressed rapidly and a blood test was done which helped us confirm a rattlesnake bite. Mickey is doing well after receiving antivenin, pain medication, IV fluids and antibiotics. The swelling will take a week or more to resolve. He is happy to be home!!
Even though it is still cold, the snakes are on the move. Mickey was the second snakebite we have treated at our Murrieta facility in two days. If this is a typical year we will treat over 150 snakebites between our two facilities between now and October. Be careful not to let your pets run free in dry river beds, fields and rocky areas. This time of year snakes are more likely to be present under rocks or hiding in your garage for warmth.
If your pet is bitten, the best thing to do is seek care immediately. Tourniquets can do more harm than good, so they are best avoided. Talk to your primary care doctor and see if the rattlesnake vaccine is right for you and your pet.
Warm wishes and please keep your friends safe!
